Cape Cod Bike Travel Weekend
The 2019 Cape Cod Bike Travel Weekend was fantastic and we're already making plans for 2020. We hope you'll join us then. In the meantime, check out Riverway Ride or Ice Cream Ride for other fun, relaxed bike adventures.
With the 2019 Bike Travel Weekend behind us, we’re already making plans for the next Adventure Cycling Association’s Cape Cod Bike Travel Weekend Event, June 6 & 7, 2020. This non-profit organization’s mission is to inspire and empower people to travel by bicycle. We’re delighted to be leading one of three Adventure Cycling national events that weekend helping empower individuals and families to discover bicycle travel as we explore beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The goal for the weekend is to have fun exploring the Cape by bike while providing a supportive event that helps more riders discover the joys of overnight bike travel. We'll be arranging camping and hotel options, carrying luggage while you ride, supporting the route with sag vehicles and attentive volunteers and arranging for Saturday's dinner and Sunday's breakfast in camp to minimize the logistical challenges and maximize the fun. Families, couples, seniors, singles - whether you’re new to overnight bike travel or already have a few adventures behind you, you’re welcome to join us for this tour. We anticipate 75 riders of varying ages and abilities so you’re sure to find others along the way who ride at your pace and share your inability to pass by an ice cream stand, coffee shop, clam roll, ocean vista, or sunning harbor seal without stopping.
Our Route: Thirty- Mile Days on the Cape Cod Rail Trail and Local Roads
We’re excited about two newly-revised routes for 2020. For Saturday, we’re planning a route that travels the beautiful (and traffic-free) Cape Cod Rail Trail to the quintessential seaside town of Chatham. There, we’ll follow the scenic cycling route through town passing beaches, the Chatham lighthouse and some of the amazing seaside homes. We’ve even scheduled a stop at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge to allow you to stretch your legs and dip your toes in the Atlantic. From Chatham, we’ll cross the Cape on quieter local roads to Brewster and Nickerson State Park for our overnight stay. The updated route will be posted here later this fall.
After breakfast on Sunday, we’ll ride out following the rail trail north to the Cape Cod National Seashore and beautiful Coast Guard Beach. Park your bike and watch the waves crash, boats pass and maybe a few harbor seals swimming by as they watch you watch them. Then, we’ll travel further out on the Cape and cross to the bay side to savor the quiet back roads and bike paths taking us back to your vehicles. There, your luggage will be ready to be packed up along with wonderful memories of your Bike Travel Weekend adventure. The updated Sunday route will be posted here later this fall.
Overnight: Camping at Nickerson State Park or Hotel Option
On Saturday night, we’ll be camping at Nickerson State Park in Brewster. (We’ve also arranged alternate motel accommodations in nearby Orleans at the Seashore Park Inn and the Rodeway Inn.) Our group campsite overlooks beautiful Cliff Pond. We’ll hope for warm weather and a refreshing swim after your Saturday ride. Want to get in some more riding? The park also boasts some wonderful paved bike trails that allow you to explore more remote portions of the beautiful forest.
What’s better than a day of cycling on Cape Cod? Following it up with a delicious clam bake and music! Matt and his team at Backside Bakes will be on hand to prepare the quintessential Cape Cod dining event with fresh lobster, steamers, corn on the cob and more. They’ll also have kid friendly, vegetarian and less “fishy” options. The evening meal is a great opportunity to visit with others, celebrate your day’s ride and refuel for tomorrow’s adventure.
After dinner, we’ll gather around a campfire and welcome Cape Cod singer/songwriter Erin Deneen, a rising Nashville star, to perform some of her own work and classic tunes. She’s got a great voice to compliment her creative songwriting and a full suitcase of engaging stories from her performances around the country.
Supporting Your Adventure
We’ve assembled a wonderful team to support your Cape Cod Bike Travel Weekend. We’ll carry your gear, mark your route, offer sag support, provide some helpful volunteers along the way and cater Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast. We’re delighted to have Sean and Liz from Speed and Sprocket Cycleworks along to provide mechanical support before and during the tour. In addition, we appreciate the assistance of Barb’s Bike Shop in South Dennis and Wheelhouse Bike Co. in Chatham for their enthusiastic support for this event.
